General Publishing

What is self-publishing?

Self-publishing means you publish your book independently — retaining full rights and creative control — rather than signing with a traditional publishing house. A publishing-services company like The Book Publishers UK handles the professional execution: editing, design, distribution, and marketing. You remain the author and publisher.

How is The Book Publishers UK different from a vanity press?

A reputable publishing-services company operates transparently, charges clearly defined fees for clearly defined services, and never takes a share of your copyright or royalties. A vanity press typically charges inflated fees with little quality control and sometimes claims co-ownership of your work. We provide a written service agreement, itemised scope of work, and full rights retention before any payment is made.

Do I need an agent to work with you?

No. Literary agents represent authors seeking traditional publishing deals. Self-publishing with The Book Publishers UK is a direct relationship between you and our team. No agent is required.

Editorial Services

What if my manuscript needs a lot of work?

Many manuscripts do — that's what editing is for. We've worked with first-time authors whose first draft needed substantial development and delivered finished books that received starred reviews. The state of your manuscript determines the services recommended, not whether we can help.

Can you edit my book if it's already been self-edited?

Yes. We work with manuscripts at every stage of polish. Authors who have done careful self-editing often need primarily copy editing and proofreading; those earlier in the process may benefit from a developmental pass. Your manuscript assessment will clarify the recommendation.

Cover Design

Can I use my own cover design?

Yes. If you have a professionally designed cover that meets print and digital specifications, we can proceed with it. We'd review the files to confirm they're production-ready before proceeding.

What size will my book be?

We publish in the most common trade sizes: 5×8 and 6×9 for most fiction and non-fiction, 8.5×11 for workbooks and textbooks, and custom sizes for children's books. Your consultant will recommend the most appropriate size for your genre.

Distribution & Sales

Will my book be available in my local bookstore?

Through Ingram distribution, any bookstore using the Ingram network — which includes most independent bookstores in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia — can order your book. Physical shelf placement is at the retailer's discretion, but your title will be available to order in-store and online.

How do I receive royalty payments?

Each distribution platform pays royalties directly to the account you register with them. We help you set up your platform accounts and understand the payment schedules. Amazon KDP pays monthly; Ingram pays quarterly.

Can I sell books directly to readers?

Yes. Many authors sell signed copies through their own website or at events. You can order copies of your book at cost price through your distribution accounts. We can also help you set up a direct-sales solution if this is a meaningful part of your strategy.

Marketing

Does self-publishing make money?

Self-publishing can generate meaningful income, but — like any creative business — it takes time, effort, and good marketing. Many authors build sustainable income over multiple titles. We don't make income promises; what we do is help you maximise reach and discoverability through sound marketing strategy.

What is BookTok and should I be on it?

BookTok is a book-focused community on TikTok that has driven significant discovery and sales for certain genres — especially literary fiction, romance, and young adult. Whether it's worth your energy depends on your genre and comfort with video content. Your marketing consultant will assess its relevance to your specific book.

Working With Us

What if I'm not happy with the work?

Every deliverable includes revision rounds. If work doesn't meet the agreed scope, we revise at no additional charge. Your consultant is your direct escalation point at any stage of the project.

Can I work with The Book Publishers UK if I'm outside the United States?

Yes. We work with authors worldwide. All our services are delivered remotely and our distribution network is global. Time zone differences are managed via email and scheduled calls at mutually suitable hours.
